This is a week earlier than the first Hummingbirds of Connecticut in 2024, which showed up around April 23, 2024, and two weeks earlier than the first sightings in Connecticut of 2023, which happened on April 26. Funny, because we've only had a few days when the temps reach the 60's, and there's still frost advisories and warnings being issued.

You should be watching your feeders for four different types of Hummingbirds in Connecticut for 2025 according to birdwatchinghq.com. The most common species is the one identified at all 5 sightings in our state so far this year - the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird. Ruby-Throated Hummingbird boys have the striking red throat, while the girls have white throats with green streaks. You may rarely see Rufous Hummingbirds, Black-Chinned Hummingbirds, or Calliope Hummingbirds here too. Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds are far and away the most common.

What Should You Feed Hummingbirds?

Audubon.org suggests a 1:4 mixture of refined white sugar and water. Mix 1/4 cup of sugar to a cup of water, let it sit to bring it up to room temperature, put it into your Hummingbird feeder, and change it regularly. Good luck!
