New York Woman’s Star Trek Plates Cause Nationwide Ticket Nightmare!
According to CBS, a Long Island retiree is blaming her old Star Trek license plates for receiving tens of thousands of dollars in traffic tickets.
Beda Koorey, 76, from Huntington, New York, stopped driving in 2020, sold her car, and surrendered her custom plates featuring "NCC-1701" — the number of the Starship Enterprise. However, she’s now receiving tickets from all over the country, including speeding fines from Chicago.
Despite no longer driving, Koorey continues to receive a steady stream of traffic tickets, including red light violations, speeding tickets, and E-ZPass toll charges. The culprit? Apparently, some Star Trek fans are purchasing cheap novelty plates online and replacing the real ones with identical ones, causing tickets to be sent to Koorey’s address.
Koorey has even received a call from a police chief in Ohio, where her plates were allegedly linked to a robbery. She's now facing a mounting pile of fines, totaling tens of thousands of dollars, a situation made worse by her limited income.
The New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has confirmed that Koorey’s plates were properly surrendered and that the issue is a matter for law enforcement. Unfortunately, outdated data in some states has led to the tickets being sent to her.
Koorey, who struggles with hearing and vision problems, has spent countless hours dealing with the situation. Thankfully, after CBS News covered the story, lawmakers have promised to assist her, and a pro bono attorney has stepped in to help resolve the issue.
Here's a solution, be a Star Wars fan, the movies are better anyway. May the force be with you, and also with you.
