‘Modern Milkman’ Expands Service to Several Connecticut Cities
I witnessed the last good years of the local milkman in the Waterbury of the 1970's. I was the one that had to go out in the snow to get our two fresh bottles of milk from the box on the side of our house. If you miss that feeling, a coalition of local Connecticut dairy farmers have just expanded their milkman delivery area to several new towns in Connecticut, including Waterbury.
The service is The Modern Milkman, and they've been delivering in the greater suburban Hartford area only, but as of January 15, 2024, can now officially deliver to 6 new towns across Connecticut, they are:
- Canton
- Cheshire
- North Haven
- Portland
- Torrington
- Waterbury
The modern Milkman already delivers to: Avon, Bloomfield, Bolton, Coventry, Cromwell, East Granby, East Hartford, East Windsor, Ellington, Enfield, Farmington, Glastonbury, Manchester, Newington, Rocky Hill, Simsbury, Somers, South Windsor, Stafford, Suffield, Tolland, Union, Vernon, West Hartford, West Suffield, Wethersfield, Willington, Windsor, and Windsor Locks.
It's a co-op of Connecticut dairy farmers, you have to buy shares in order to become part of the collective. Weekly deliveries of four to twelve different dairy products range from $25 to $42 dollars, with a nominal delivery fee. There are almost 30 partners listed on The ModernMilkman.com, and almost all of them are in Connecticut. Litchfield's Arethusa Farms, Southbury's Hannan Honey, Goshen's Nodine's Smokehouse, and Liuizzi Cheese from Hamden are partners, as is Cabot in Vermont, Little Rhody Egg Farms from Rhode Island, and even jerky from New Jersey's Jersey Boy Jerky.
Now I have to go out and buy a big Coleman, no way I'm trusting the insulation on those old aluminum boxes in 2024.
