Massive Closures Announced for American Retail Giant, What About CT?
Macy's made a huge announcement on Tuesday (2/27/24).
Macy's said it would close 150 stores in a massive restructuring effort. According to NPR, Chief Executive Tony Spring had this to say in a call to investors:
Our thresholds to keep a store open have become more stringent. The core formula for success is ... going back to basics and balancing the art and science of retail by putting the customer first.
Spring had this to say in the press release:
"Our portfolio of iconic and globally recognized nameplates, healthy balance sheet and fortified operations position us to execute A Bold New Chapter. This strategy is designed to create a more modern Macy’s, Inc. that is expected to generate meaningful value for our shareholders in the years ahead.”
That is 2024 corporate speak for the 4th quarter was bad and heads will roll. So what does this mean for the Connecticut Macy's locations? There are 6 locations in the Nutmeg State that include:
- Danbury
- Manchester
- Farmington/West Hartford

Will any of these Connecticut stores be impacted? NPR says:
Macy's has yet to specify which stores will close, saying only that 50 will shutter this year and the rest by the end of 2026.
We will share more information about the Connecticut Macy's stores as we get it.
