Connecticut Adrenaline Junkies go Kite Surfing in the Cold
I love when people do weird things. I’m also fully aware that I am someone who does things that make people stop and ask, “What made you do that?” The honest answer is usually something along the lines of, “I don’t know,” or, “I just wanted to see if I could.” Curiosity gets the best of us sometimes.

That said… this is not one of those situations.
And no, this isn’t about the cold. I can handle winter just fine. But kite surfing? That’s a hard no for me. I think it looks hilarious and genuinely impressive from a safe distance, but when I imagine actually doing it, all I see is a very fast, very public shoulder dislocation. To me, it feels like a sport specifically designed to separate joints from their sockets. I’d be out there like a slow-roasted duck, meat practically falling right off the bone.
The video that sparked all of this was posted to the Connecticut Reddit page, and I’m going to take a small leap of faith and trust the original poster. There isn’t quite enough footage or identifiable landmarks in the clip for me to confidently swear this happened in Connecticut — or even recently — but I’d say the odds are about 60/40 in favor of it being legit.
The post came from u/hotgnipgnaps and was titled “Kite Surfers Today in Stratford,” uploaded on January 19, 2026. Take a look for yourself and decide whether you’re impressed… or, like me, perfectly content watching from very far away.

I’ll tell you this much — wetsuits are absolutely vital. I used to do the Penguin Plunge for years, and jumping into the water when it’s that cold is no joke. It’s honestly shocking how painful it can be. The cold hits instantly, like your body doesn’t even have time to process what’s happening.

You don’t need minutes in the water to learn that lesson either. Just a few seconds is more than enough to make you question every decision you’ve ever made and send you sprinting back toward the beach, dignity fully abandoned.
