I-84 Will Be Temporarily Closed on Wednesday Night, Plan Accordingly
The Newtown Police Department has just announced that I-84 East and Westbound will be temporarily closed this week as the Connecticut Department of Transportation installs more wrong-way-driver detection systems.

Second or third shift workers of Western Connecticut who commute along I-84 East and West through Newtown: A slight delay in your commute this week will result in a safer drive overall for you in the future. In the past few weeks, the Connecticut D.O.T. has announced wrong-way-driver detection measures will be installed in numerous locations around greater Danbury and Waterbury, with projects on I-84 Westbound at Exit 25&22 in Waterbury, Exit 15 Westbound in Southbury, and Route 7 Southbound in Danbury during the coming weeks.
The installation that has the chance to cause the most disruption though is slated for Wednesday, March 12, 2025. At 7PM that evening, I-84 East and West will temporarily be closed until 5AM for the installation of wrong-way-driver-detection systems at Exit 11 (RT. 34) in Newtown.
Here's the detour information provided by Newtown Police Department: For those on 84 Eastbound, take Exit 13 (River Road) instead to Oakdale Road, then take the Exit 13 on-ramp westbound to Exit 10 (Church Hill Rd), then to Berkshire Road, and then Wasserman Way. Whew.
For drivers on 84 West, take Exit 11 to Exit 10 to Church Hill Rd to Berkshire Rd to Wasserman Way.
These ramps have been under some form of realignment, renovation, and reconstruction for over a decade, it's a more confusing area than you would imagine. I'm sure the worst part of this temporary closure will be between 7 and 10PM. Please plan accordingly.
