According to a release from the City of Danbury, the city will host a purple flag-raising ceremony Thursday, October 1, in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The event will take place at 4:00 p.m. outside Danbury City Hall at 155 Deer Hill Avenue, with Mayor Roberto Alves and the Center for Empowerment and Education joining together for the ceremony.

The purple flag is meant to serve as a visible reminder of domestic violence awareness and the people in our community who have been affected by it. The event will also provide an opportunity to recognize survivors, remember people who have lost their lives to domestic violence and highlight the importance of having resources and support available to those who need them.

And let's be honest, sometimes a visual reminder can be pretty powerful. You drive or walk past City Hall and see a giant purple flag flying, and it gives people a reason to stop for a second and think about an issue that can often happen behind closed doors.

The City says the ceremony is also intended to reinforce the community's commitment to safety, support and dignity for everyone. The event is being held in partnership with the Center for Empowerment and Education, an organization that provides support and resources related to domestic violence.

The City of Danbury is inviting members of the public to attend the flag-raising. You don't have to be directly connected to the issue to participate. The event is open to anyone who wants to show support for survivors and help bring more awareness to domestic violence.

So, if you're in downtown Danbury Thursday afternoon, the purple flag will be going up at City Hall at 4:00 p.m. It's a relatively short ceremony, but the message behind it is pretty significant.

Maybe this works out, maybe not at least I can say "look at this!"
