Connecticut Tops New England For Religious Engagement In 2025
Nearly two-thirds of the population of the United States are religiously affiliated, can you guess where the least religious states in 2025 are? If you said Connecticut, or anywhere in New England, you're correct.
SmileHub.org has just released their new study Most Religious States in 2025, and based on their rankings Connecticut is the most religious state in all of New England. To arrive at their rankings SmileHub compared all 50 states across three key dimensions: Religious Interest & Places to Worship, Religious Education & Careers, and Religion-Affiliated Organizations.

That data was further evaluated using 13 relevant metrics: Share of Adults Who Consider Religion Very Important in their Lives, Share of Adherents, Share of People Who Attend Religious Services At least Once a Week, Share of Religiously Unaffiliated People, Congregations per Capita, Places of Worship per Capita, Religious Studies Degrees Awarded per Capita, Share of Religion-Related Careers, Faith and Religious Support Charities per Capita, and Religious Establishments per Capita.
SmileHub ranks Connecticut as the 37th most religious state in the US for 2025, despite the fact that Connecticut ranks as the #2 state in the category of Religious Education & Careers. We ranked #40 in Religious Interest & Places of Worship, and #37 in Religion-Affiliated Organizations.
How Did Our New England Neighbors Do?
As for the rest of New England, the further North you go, the less religious you get. Rhode Island was ranked at #43, Massachusetts at #45, Vermont at #48, Maine at #49, and the least religious state for 2025 at #50 is New Hampshire. Waterbury's Holyland USA truly is the religious beacon of New England.
