When people think of hospitals, “safe place” is the first thing that comes to mind. But according to the latest safety report cards, not all hospitals meet that ideal. In the Fall 2025 evaluation by The Leapfrog Group, one hospital in Connecticut landed at the bottom of the pack — a sobering red flag for patients and families.

But there is good news. According to ctinsider.com, the Leapfrog Group’s latest fall report card, Connecticut ranks among the top states overall for hospital safety, but this ranking masks significant variation. While many hospitals made the grade, some received a “C” or “D” rating.

The Hospital at the Bottom: Day Kimball Hospital - Located in Putnam, CT, This hospital was the only CT hospital that received a D grade and ranked "worse than average" due to issues with infections, patient falls, and medication safety.

The Following CT Hospitals Received a 'C' grade:

Bridgeport Hospital – Milford Campus.

Bristol Health (formerly Bristol Hospital)

Lawrence & Memorial HospitalNew London

Manchester Memorial Hospital - Manchester

St. Francis Hospital & Medical Center - Hartford

Waterbury Hospital - Waterbury

Yale New Haven HospitalSaint Raphael Campus

Yale New Haven Hospital (Main Campus)

These “C” and “D” grades indicate below-average performance on safety metrics, including preventable medical errors, injuries, infections, and surgical complications.

C-rated hospitals are not necessarily “bad” overall, but compared with others in the state, they ranked lower on avoidable-harm metrics.

D-rated - Day Kimball Hospital — the lowest in the state — signals the most significant safety concerns among CT general hospitals as of Fall 2025.
