When my kids were growing up, they would ask when it was time to go apple picking every September. I believe they all tolerated wandering through the apple orchards and quickly picking apples as fast as possible because they knew that apple picking was only a preamble to the good stuff, those sugary, melt-in-your-mouth homemade apple cider donuts. Averill Farm – Washington Depot, CT...Since I see myself as a cider donut expert, I feel confident telling you that Averill Farm has the best and freshest melt-in-your-mouth cider donuts in the state! Located at 250 Calhoun Street in Washington Depot, this long-standing family farm (tenth generation!) is in the Litchfield Hills. Great if you want that “classic Connecticut orchard day” vibe.

Blue Jay Orchards – Bethel, CT...Located at 125 Plumtrees Road, this large orchard with 8,000+ producing trees across 122 acres to roam, offers seasonal apple picking, a pumpkin patch, a farm market, and a bakery.

Lyman Orchards – Middlefield, CT...Located at 32 Reeds Gap Road, Middlefield(only an hour drive from Danbury), Lyman Orchards offers pick-your-own orchards along with a corn and sunflower maze, AND the 1741 Pub & Grill, plus the Lyman Orchards Golf Club! 

Rogers Orchards – Southington, CT - Established in 1807, Rogers Orchards comprises 275 acres and includes twenty varieties of apples and fifteen varieties of peaches, as well as nectarines, apricots, plums, pumpkins, flowers, and herbs. But wait, there's more! Their famous apple cider donuts are legendary, as are their pies, locally grown vegetables, and other specialty food items.

Beardsley’s Cider Mill & Orchard – Shelton, CT - Located at 278 Leavenworth Road, Beardsley's is well known for its homemade cider manufactured in their true cider mill. Their orchards are home to over 13,000 apple and 400 peach trees.  Pick-your-own apples are available on weekends only from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Make sure to visit their farm bakery for their legendary cider donuts, gluten-free cookies, fruit breads, soft and delicious scones, coffee cakes, and local honey.

Silverman’s Farm – Easton, CT - Kids and adults all love to visit Silverman’s rustic animal farm! See, pet, and feed all sorts of unusual animals, including buffalo, llamas, alpacas, sheep, goats, fallow deer, emus, and long-horn cattle. Picnic tables are available in the park area.
