Carmel’s Route 301 Scene Of A Deadly Multi-car Accident
According to the Town of Carmel Police Department, a deadly crash shut down a stretch of Route 301 on Thursday morning after a chain-reaction collision involving four vehicles. It happened around 9:15 a.m. near Smokey Hollow Court — a winding part of the road that locals know can be tricky on a good day.

Police say a 2024 Subaru Impreza, driven by 74-year-old Vito Planamento of Brewster, was heading east on Route 301 when it came around a curve and slammed into a pickup truck towing a trailer with an excavator. The impact was severe, and despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Planamento later died from his injuries.
The crash didn’t stop there. The initial impact sparked a secondary collision with two other vehicles traveling in the area. One of those drivers suffered minor injuries, according to police.

The scene prompted a massive emergency response and forced the closure of Route 301 from Gipsy Trail Road to Dixon Road for several hours while crews worked, reconstructed the crash, and cleared the debris. Investigators say that unsafe speed appears to have played a role, but the full picture is still being pieced together.
The Town of Kent Police, Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, multiple fire departments, EMS crews, and even LifeNet were called in to help.
The investigation is ongoing, and more details may surface as police continue their work.
