Brewster Girls Football Coach Recognized by the New York Giants Organization
Did you know that Brewster High School has a girls flag football team?
I was not aware but I'm happy to hear it, I was even more delighted to learn that they won Section I championship this year. The Bears went undefeated in their inaugural season. Finally, I learned that the team, and Head Coach Matt Cunningham were recognized for their efforts by the New York Giants organization.
The Giants named Cunningham the Lou Rettino High School Coach of the Week for Week 2 of the 2022. Cunningham will be given a certificate of recognition from the G-Men, be a featured guest at a Big Blue dinner after the season, and his program gets a $2,000 check. The money comes courtesy of the the Giants Foundation and Gatorade.
According to NY Giants, Cunningham has been a social studies teacher in Brewster for 17 years. In an interview with the Giants, Cunninham had this to say of the award:
"I have been humbled to work with so many wonderful student athletes. This year's girls flag football truly exemplifies our definition of student/athletes. Working alongside fellow coach Mike Castaldo, these girls took on the challenge of learning and competing in a new sport and excelled. All the credit for our team's success goes to these girls who worked so hard throughout the season to bring home a championship and really make the community very proud. I am so thankful to the New York Giants for affording Brewster and others the opportunity to embrace playing football; It has been a rewarding experience."
The Brewster Bears Championship Flag Football team also was invited to a Giants pre-season game where they played an exhibition against the Binghamton Patriots at halftime.
As a Brewster High School graduate (Class of '97), let me just say "YEAH BEARS!" Growing up in Brewster was like winning the Region lottery. I was surrounded by hard-working, amazing people who have accomplished so much. It always makes me feel proud to see Brewster people achieve, and I'm very happy for Mr. Cunningham and the entire Bears Flag Football Team.
P.S. Sorry I almost missed this B-Town, Y'all have been busy lately.
