Birders of Connecticut: Is This a Great Blue Heron, or Egret?
I've seen a lot of wildlife walking my dog along the Naugatuck River in Torrington, but this is a new one that I've never seen before. I want to say it's an Egret, or a Great Blue Heron? Birders of Connecticut, can you help identify this beautiful creature for me?
Shoreline birds are very common along the Naugatuck River Valley, I've dealt with the pesky seagulls in the Colonial Plaza in Waterbury for decades, but the big shoreline birds? Never. I do know it's peak migration time for birds, thanks to the excellent work that LightsoutCT.org has done over the past few years in educating us all. By the way, while I have your attention - Turn off your outdoor, non-essential lighting between 7PM and 6AM, there are millions of birds flying over Connecticut on the overnight, and every little less bit of light pollution helps.
Anyway, from the online searches that I did, I think this is a pair of Great Blue Heron, one was blue/gray and the other was completely white in color. They were only on this part of the Naugatuck River for about 10 minutes before I saw both of them take off.
