The owl spirit animal usually symbolizes death, but it can also mean a great change will come into your life.

The Owl represents transition, and its appearance is said to be a sign to help guide you through difficult times in your life.

According to askinglot.com, the owl was a symbol for Athena, the goddess of wisdom and strategy. According to ancient myths, an owl sat on Athena's blind side so that she could see the whole truth. In Ancient Greece, the owl was a symbol of a higher wisdom, and it was also a guardian of the Acropolis.

So just what does it mean when an owl appears to you in a nearby tree or fence post? If you live in my neighborhood, it's believed to be a sign from the great beyond.

Case and point at my house. Last March, we lost my Father-In Law to the COVID-19 pandemic. Needless to say, my family was devastated, but just a day or so after his passing we kept getting a visit from an owl. Now I have to tell you, we had heard owls hooting at night in the neighborhood, but really never saw them until this passing.

Since this event, owls have been appearing around sunset in the trees and fence posts all around my yard. My wife seems to be the main recipient of these owl visits which she sees as signs from her father.

Now you could say it's just a coincidence, but the timing of these special visits can really get you thinking. In one such instance, last year, shortly after my Father-In-Law passed, my Mother-In-Law was hospitalized with a severe case of COVID-19. As doctors and my wife talked on the phone about putting her on a ventilator and if they should resuscitate or not, the owl made an appearance and was hooting so loud my wife could barely hear the doctor. She took it as a sign from her father and said no ventilator. My Mother-In-Law recovered and left the hospital about a month later.

Since then, every once in a while the owl has appeared and in some cases showed up very close to where my wife was, whether she was in the yard or taking a walk around our neighborhood. Just the other night as I pulled in my driveway, I noticed the owl perched on the basketball hoop, then he jumped on a branch right next to my car. When I told my wife, she said she had asked her father to help me with the transition from doing morning to now switching to afternoons on the radio.

Other people in our neighborhood have had owl visits, one shortly after the loss of a brother, and another after the loss of a parent. The neighbors all feel that the owl is our own neighborhood spiritual animal.

So what have I learned from all these owl visits? Just that owls seem to be watching us from afar and nudge us to the right direction with their signs and symbols. They give us answers we are desperately searching for, all we have to do is be aware and listen closely.
