Think about your life honestly, and try to figure out what TV character you most identify with.

First, you need to figure out who you want to be like, and then find ways to dismiss that.

So, I did that first. I am funny, so I think of Louie from Louie. Same first name, red hair and funny.

The similarities end there. Louie has worked tirelessly his whole career at being genius funny. He has nailed it with his stand up and TV shows. For all the effort he spends trying to convince us he is lazy, any reasonable person can see he is not.

Tony Soprano. We are both Italian, we have cultural similarities, and the people that were in this fictional world remind me of family members and friends.

Tony was a sociopath, a liar and a thief. I am only one of those things. You can guess which one. I could not live like that. Looking over your shoulder everyday is a burden. A burden I have had, but never on that level.

Jax Teller, Sons of Anarchy. I guess I am just Irish, and that's about it.

OK, I have nothing in common with the character or the actor. I guess I just wish I did, because he is the only actor/character my wife openly talks about.

Then, there is Don Draper from Mad Men.

Don't dismiss the fact that I just compared myself to one of the most handsome, slick dudes on TV. I will do that for you. I don't think that I am like him in those ways, but watching Mad Men was the first time I ever saw a character on film that I could really relate to. I know the differences for sure. He is handsome and paid. Not me. But he had a creative job that he loves, and his talent gave him a crutch that protected him from years of misbehaving. Yeah, and there is the drinking and smoking. When I finished watching the series, I was glad that we do have differences, and that I am not that sad, hopeless or lonely. In fact, I have everything he and everyone else is searching for.
