I love Bar Rescue on Spike TV, and I've learned a few things from Jon Taffer:

1.    There are a lot of people with money that buy bars that they have no business owning. I've felt this way many times over the years walking into what I thought was going to be a nice bar, and the ownership quickly made me want to leave and never come back.

2.    Sometimes people need a mirror held up to their face, and their flaws pointed out. I love seeing that moment on the show when the bar owners actually understand why the pirate costumes weren't working, or that you have to appeal to your surrounding community in order to succeed. There are so many bars that are driven by one person's misguided ego.

3.    A clean establishment will result in higher revenue. There are quite a few bars around Connecticut that should A.) Hire a cleaning crew, or B.) Assign house-cleaning duties to their staff. Nothing turns me off more than drinking and eating in someone else's food remnants.

4.    Attentiveness and speed will result in higher revenues. I'm a sucker for the up-sell. If my server asks, "Would you like Gorgonzola on your salad?" My response is typically "YES". I'm usually so engrossed by the menu items, that all the little details fly by me, and most of the time, I don't realize that Gorgonzola was even an option to make my salad even yummier. And if you get the food to me in a timely manner? I'll leave, and that table is once again ready to accept another paying customer.

Oh Jon Taffer, you have made me a much savvier bar patron. Now I wish you'd rescue more bars around Connecticut like the biker bar you made over near New London/Stonington!
