A Connecticut tribal nation claims that the state took away over 2,000 acres of their land in the 1800's and the tribe is asking for $610 million in compensation.According to the cnnwire.com, the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation called the taking of their land unconstitutional and are suing for $610 million. The Tribe's attorney, Austin Tighe wants to make it clear that they are not suing to recoup the 2,000 acres, but feel justified in asking for fair compensation. Tighe will claim the state promised to compensate the tribe when they confiscated their land over 91 different times over a period of 117 years, but repeatedly broke that promise.

Former Senator Joe Lieberman is one of the attorneys for the Tribe and told NewsChannel 3,

"It is clear to me that the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation has been treated unfairly for a long time and has meritorious claims against the state. The state acted unconstitutionally and STN is entitled to be compensated by the state for those wrongful acts."

Chief of the STN, Richard Velkey added,

"Beginning with the creation of our reservation in 1736, the state has blatantly and dismissively manipulated the system against the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation for nearly three centuries."

Attorney General, George Jepsen said they are reviewing the complaint and will respond at the appropriate time in court.
