According to an article in the News-Times, math scores among 4th and 8th graders across the country were down. In reading, 8th grade scores were down and 4th grade scores were flat.The National Assessment of Educational test is given to a sample of students across the country, which in Connecticut amounted to 9,300 students. How did Connecticut score? Our state's 4th grade math scores are usually above the national average but slipped to match the national average this time around. On a 0 to 500 scale, Connecticut 4th graders along with the rest of the nation scored a 240.

Overall, 36% of Connecticut's 8th graders were proficient, but 30% who took the test scored below the basic range. 41% of Connecticut 4th graders scored proficient or better which was down from 45% back in 2013.

43% of Connecticut 4th and 8th graders were proficient or better in reading which was the same score from two years ago.

I've been asking teacher friends of mine to share their thoughts about the current state of teaching in Connecticut. Every single one of those teachers had absolutely nothing positive to say about their profession, which is very sad.
