Just the mention of the Windmill Diner in Danbury brings back memories of late nights spent with friends soaking up our "reverie" with french fries slathered with brown gravy! Has another great local tradition come to an end?

The Windmill Diner on Mill Plain Road in Danbury is no more. The diner closed on January 4 after more than forty years in business on Mill Plain Road in Danbury Connecticut. Oh no!...while that's sad, it's not ALL bad. It has reopened under new ownership and will now be called the Mill Plain Diner.

That makes me happy because frankly I'm not ready to let go of a spot that carries memories and traditions for me from when I was young, through my teens and twenties and well into "adulthood."

As a youngster it was a great Sunday treat for my family to go to the Windmill for breakfast. As a teen it was my after movie hot spot, in my twenties it was my hot spot for late night french fries and gravy to "take care of business" before heading home. Many years later, when I no longer lived in the Danbury area, but my mom still did, it was the place she loved to get a "bite" after her numerous doctors appointments. For mom and I the Windmill Diner was a "comfort" spot serving up "comfort" food. So, to that end, I'm glad the tradition "lives" on in the form of the "new" Mill Plain Diner. Now serve me those fries and gravy!
