May 23 is very special to me. It's my wedding anniversary. Now, I will forever think of the tortoise too!

Little did I know when I got married on May 23 that my special day would eventually share the calendar with World Turtle Day®

Reality is that turtles and tortoises do wander around. I know I've seen incredibly large ones meandering down the road numerous times. Even in Connecticut, if you remember this story from newstimes.com, when the Route 7 bypass opened in 2009, the state built a $1 million concrete wildlife culvert underneath it. Box Turtles are just one of many members of wildlife making use of it.

American Tortoise Rescue is a nonprofit organization in California that was established for the protection of all species of tortoise and turtle. Today, May 23, ATR celebrates the 16th annual World Turtle Day® as they continue to protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world. It has even turned into a global event with participation in the US, Canada, Pakistan, Borneo, India, Australia, the UK and lot's of other countries.

And as Aesop's Fables taught us as children in The Hare and The Tortoise, slow and steady wins the race. Turtles rule!
