Hug your mother today, and celebrate the wonders of our Earth.

Earth Day is an annual celebration of the planet we live on, and the environmental movement to protect it. What can we do on this, the 46th annual Earth Day? According to earthday.org, how about we reach for three billion acts of green.

The first Earth Day was held in 1970. Sen. Gaylord Nelson, a Democrat from Wisconsin came up with a plan to host a national teach-in on the environment, and the rest is history, according to earthday.org.

On a local level, the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection offers tips for saving mother Earth today and every day. And while Hamden, Connecticut celebrated last weekend, there are events scheduled state-wide for not only today, Earth Day, but also this Saturday and Sunday, as well as, Saturday, April 30. To see where they are, you can go to ctgov.org/deep

From striving to have more green cities and schools, to reducing our carbon footprint, to upping our commitment to recycling, every day should be Earth Day.
