Connecticut Wants Your Deer Heads

Do you have any deer heads lying around?If the answer to my question is "yes," the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection's (DEEP) Wildlife Division is collecting those deer heads.

Why, you might ask? It's serious stuff, according to DEEP. There's a relatively new disease that develops inside the brain and nervous systems of deer, elk and moose called Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).

The disease produces lesions on the brain and eventually results in death. DEEP reports that CWD will not thin the herd immediately but getting out in front of the disease and how to control it will prevent a die-off.

So, getting back to the collection of deer heads. If you're a hunter of deer, you're probably wondering how you donate the deer heads you've accumulated.

The first thing you need to do is fill out a deer head collection tag. That can be accomplished by going to this website.

Once the application has been completed, it needs to be picked up accompanied by the deer head. Click on the Connecticut Fish and Wildlife FB page for step-by-step details.

CWD has not been discovered in Connecticut yet and DEEP would like to keep it that way. Most CWD cases show up west of Illinois. In April of this year, it was found in Europe. Get those heads in ASAP!
