The Old Pin Shop in Oakville is home to a new store

As Mrs. Large and I were waltzing into Hardcore Cupcakes to get out sugar fix this past Saturday, we noticed that a new store had opened up right next to them in the Old Pin Shop at 20 Main Street in Oakville. It's called Funky Stuff, and it certainly lives up to it's name. We were warmly greeted by the owner, Cari Jansen, as we walked in. Beautiful original artwork, hand-painted furniture, handmade candles, jaw-dropping masterpieces, and funky one-of-a-kind items line the walls and shelves.

We started chatting and Cari explained that there are plenty of artists that have no outlet to share their works of art, let alone sell them. All of their artists are Connecticut based, most of them in the greater Waterbury area. Cari was also quick to point out that she does not take a commission on the retail sales of the art, unlike most places. I was particularly struck by a few pieces that a young Waterbury artist had made, which featured Fab Five Freddy from Yo! MTV Raps, and Blondie's "Rapture" fame. This artist also had a painting entitled "High above Rt. 8" that really drew my attention.

Cari also told us about a Mitten Tree that they were going to start collecting for this Friday November 27th. They are collecting new pairs of kid's mittens over the next few weeks, and decorating a tree with them. After December 22nd, they will be donated to Family Services of Greater Waterbury. Please, if you can, drop off a pair.

Funky Stuff - The Collective is located in The Old Pin Shop at 20 Main Street in Oakville, Ct. Right next to Hardcore Cupcakes. If you're looking for unique art made from local Connecticut artists, I highly suggest you stop by and check them out.
