Ever Hear of ‘Spoofing’? Town of Brookfield Warns of New Scam
You'd be living under a rock to not be aware of all of the daily scams that come your way. Even with that, you still need to be kept up to date when despicable people try to work a new one.
While this information is geared to a specific group of people, the residents of Brookfield Connecticut, it serves us all well to pay attention to what's going on. It still could happen in your town.
This notice went up on the website for the Town of Brookfield at brookfieldct.gov and was also shared on the Facebook page Brookfield Matters
The FCC recommends residents withhold personal information to suspicious callers.
The website fcc.gov had this to say about "spoofing"
'Spoofing' occurs when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to your caller ID display to disguise their identity. Spoofing is often used as part of an attempt to trick someone into giving away valuable personal information so it can be used in fraudulent activity or sold illegally. U.S. law and FCC rules prohibit most types of spoofing.
Caller ID lets consumers avoid unwanted phone calls by displaying caller names and phone numbers, but the caller ID feature is sometimes manipulated by spoofers who masquerade as representatives of banks, creditors, insurance companies, or even the government.
