A number of local people were taken to the hospital for treatment as the result of a fire in New Milford.

According to a press release from the New Milford PD, just after 2 am on Thursday morning (May 16) New Milford Fire fighters responded to a two-alarm blaze at a house at 101 Housatonic Ave.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, the house was reportedly engulfed in flames and there was heavy fire and smoke coming from the rear of the multi-family house, while residents were seen evacuating the structure.

New Milford firefighters requested a second alarm and assistance to help battle the fire, so companies from Northville, Gaylordsville, Brookfield and station coverage from Bridgewater were called in.

Since it was a multi-family home in which a reported 11 people lived, all we able to get out before the structure became totally engulfed. The fire was brought under control within an hour and units were able to clear the scene by 4:30 am.

Out of the 11 residents, New Milford Police are reporting that two people were transported to Danbury Hospital and four were taken to New Milford Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns. None of the injuries are considered life threatening.

New Milford Police Lt. Lawrence Ash said that "the New Milford Fire Marshal has advised that as of this time, they have not located any smoke detectors at the residence and reminds people to make sure they have working smoke detectors in their homes.”

Connecticut State Police State Fire Marshal investigators were also on the scene and are in the process of determining the source and cause of the blaze.

The Red Cross are now providing assistance to those who were displaced by the fire.
