Newtown Police: Alleged Car Thief Arrested After Crash + Foot Chase
Nothing like a stolen car crash and a foot pursuit to start off a Tuesday the right way.
According to a press release from the Newtown Police Department, that's exactly what happened in the wee hours of the morning today (October 23), as officers were dispatched at about 3:00 AM in search of a stolen vehicle in the area of South Main St. and Bears Hill Road in Newtown.
The responding officers were on the lookout for a blue Toyota Highlander that was reported stolen out of Greenwich and had just been involved in a pursuit with Bridgeport Police. At the time, officers said the SUV was last seen headed north on Route 25, which is why the Newtown PD was called in.
Newtown officers says they spotted the Highlander traveling northbound on South Main St. near Pecks Ln. when they began following the vehicle. Once the reportedly stolen SUV turned onto Wasserman Way, the officer hit the siren and lights, at which point the Highlander allegedly accelerated to a high speed.
When the vehicle got to the area of 100 Wasserman way, just before the exit 11 ramp to I-84, the Toyota SUV headed off the roadway and crashed into the guardrail, causing it to come to a stop.
At that time, the driver, later identified as 18-year-old Cameron David King of Bridgeport, allegedly took off running on foot. After a brief chase, police say King was arrested and taken into custody.
Cameron David King has been charged with larceny, engaging in a police pursuit, reckless endangerment, resisting police and other traffic violations. He was held on $50,000 bond and will appear in court this morning.
