State police received word that two skiers were reported missing at Stowe Mountain Resort early Saturday evening (Fenruary 29).

For some reason, two men out for an afternoon of skiing decided to veer off the marked trails at Stowe. Tragedy struck when one of the men was found at the bottom of a cliff and pronounced dead, according to nbcconnecticut.com.

During the two-hour ordeal, the second skier was found uninjured and was guided out of the woods by professional ski rescue personnel who were dispatched at approximately 6:30 pm on Saturday evening.

The death is being investigated but doesn't appear to be suspicious. According to Vermont's wcax.com, a local skier reported that the off-trail terrain inside Smuggler's Notch State Park can be very dangerous.
