Thinking back on school lunches I don't even remember being offered any vegetables like these kids but I do have good memories of school lunches.  Sure they were not healthy, sure they were processed, sure the meats probably were not even meat.

I sure did love them though.  My favorite was easily Chicken Patty day.  It was a chicken patty on a hard roll that was two times the size of the patty itself with a head of lettuce on it and 14 lbs of mayonnaise packets.  Really, really delicious and nutritious stuff right there.  I'd wash that down with two chocolate milks and for dessert it was Dipsy Doodles and Butter Crunch cookies.  It's a wonder I was a porker in school.

We loved chicken patty so much that we would race to the cafeteria.  I remember I had science class right before lunch.  My buddy Pigpen and I would line up at the door and wait for the bell to ring and when it did we hauled ass.

I remember this one day in particular.  Both he and I led the charge to the door before the bell rang.  The problem was our teacher Ms. Theodore had had enough.  She said you are not racing to the cafeteria today and blocked the doorway.  That was a mistake on her part.  You see she just did not understand Pigpen's passion for chicken patty.  He warned her that if she did not move he was going to go right through her.  This was a threat that she did not take seriously.  Well that bell rang and he went through her.  He was first to chicken patty that day.  She was fine.  It only took a minor surgery on her knee and six weeks of rehab and she was up and running again.  If that happened in this day and age we would still be in jail.  it was wrong to barrel over an old lady.  I know this now but at the time it felt so right.  She stood between us and the only thing we believed in CHICKEN PATTY.  Sorry Ms.  Theodore.  Tale solace in the idea that karma has had it's way with both Pigpen and myself ever since.
