Veteran artists and bands like Dire Straits, Tom Petty, John Fogerty and Phil Collins were experiencing a whole new level of fame thanks to MTV exposure while bands like Mötley Crüe and Ratt were paving the way for the flurry of hair bands that would follow in the next half of the decade of decadence.
