A month long crackdown on distracted drivers started up last week in the greater Danbury area. Most drivers who text while they're driving, and I know several, will ignore this message because they think it could never happen to them, or until, God forbid, it does.

So far, since last Thursday, 39 drivers in Danbury and 33 drivers in Ridgefield have been stopped and ticketed $150 for the first offense, $300 for the second offense, and $500 for each subsequent violation. With lives on the line in an accident caused by distracted drivers, maybe a cash fine isn't enough. Maybe one week in the Bridgeport Correctional Facility would be more effective. In 2013, more than 3,000 people were killed and 424,000 were injured in accidents caused by distracted drivers. Think about this, it's not just your life on the line, it's other drivers like me, your mom or sister or brother or best friend. Put the damn cell phone down while you're driving!! Please, don't learn this lesson the hard way. For more actual footage of traffic accidents caused by texting, just go to YouTube and type, "texting" in the search bar.
