The National Weather Service has just issued a High Wind Warning which is in effect until midnight tonight for Northern Fairfield, Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Northern Westchester counties.

Winds: West 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 60 mph

Timing: Developing behind a cold frontal passage this afternoon

Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Scattered to widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. -NWS

The National Weather Service adds that a High Wind Warning means that winds with sustained speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of at least 58 mph are expected. Residents should be aware of such an event and prepare accordingly.

Weatherworks.com explains that the difference between a watch and a warning is that a watch means that "conditions are favorable or expected but not occurring or imminent". When a warning is issued it means that conditions are occurring or imminent.
