The Most Spectacular Historical Mansion in Connecticut

It's stunning inside and out. The 62 room Lockwood-Mathews Mansion is a must see. 

This National Historical Landmark in Norwalk has been described as one of the earliest and finest surviving Second Empire style country houses ever built in the United States. Even if you're not a history buff, this mansion is so impressive, you'll be amazed and possibly want to learn the history of this opulent structure.

Built by prominent New York City banker, LeGrand Lockwood, in 1864, the mansion wasn't completed until 1868. When Lockwood died in 1872, the family lost the mansion and its grounds to foreclosure in 1874. The City of Norwalk purchased the estate in 1941 and turned it into a public park. In the 1950's, the mansion was scheduled for demolition, but community preservationists saved it from being torn down. In 1971, it was designated a National Historic Landmark.

Since 1978, thanks to the many donors and contractors, the mansion has been experiencing a slow but sure revitalization. From the architecture to the woodwork to the antiques and paintings, the Lockwood Mathews Mansion has become one of the 5 most sought after tourist attractions in Connecticut. The second version of The Stepford Wives was filmed here along with the TV show, Dark Shadows.

I personally have DJ'd a couple of weddings at the mansion, and I must say, "It's breathtaking!"
