Best Quarterbacks of All Time: Where Does Peyton Rank?
My first rule, whenever I do a sports list like this is, if I didn't see the person play with my own eyes, you won't find them on my list. So, no, you won't see Terry Bradshaw, Joe Namath or Y.A. Tittle on my list. My other rule that specifically applies to football is that Super Bowl appearances and victories do matter. No matter what you have been told, making it to the big game matters, and winning it matters even more. So, here are the 8 greatest QB's of all time.
#1 - Tom Brady
Career Yards - 58,028
Super Bowl Appearances - 6
Super Bowl Victories - 4
The guy has started 6 Super Bowls and won 4. ARGUMENT OVER. I hate the Patriots, but I cannot hate Tom Brady. I just respect him way too much.
#2 - Joe Montana
Career Yards - 40,551
Super Bowl Appearances - 4
Super Bowl Victories - 4
Before Tom Brady came along, there was no more confident quarterback in the pocket. His game was so smooth it was made to see on NFL Films in slow motion. Oh, and 4 Super Bowl rings. Yeah, there is that.
#3 - Peyton Manning
Career Yards - 71,940
Super Bowl Appearances - 3
Super Bowl Victories - 1
Whatever happens during today's Super Bowl, he is one of the greats. If he loses bad, it will be a sad way to go out. Today makes his 4th Super Bowl appearance, and the guy carried himself with class his entire career. Best of luck, Peyton.
#4 - Brett Favre
Career Yards - 71,838
Super Bowl Appearances - 2
Super Bowl Victories - 1
He is the only player on this list that I would categorize as a football player before I would a quarterback. In all of my years of watching NFL football, he was my favorite player to watch.
#5 - Troy Aikman
Career Yards - 32,942
Super Bowl Appearances - 3
Super Bowl Victories - 3
Went to 3 Super Bowls and won 3. What I remember most about Aikman's playing days is that no one in football threw a prettier deep ball than Troy did.
#6 - John Elway
Career Yards - 51,475
Super Bowl Appearances - 3
Super Bowl Victories - 2
Hate his guts, but just cannot deny what a winner John Elway was. Few players ran the two minute drill like ole' beaver teeth.
#7 - Dan Marino
Career Yards - 61,361
Super Bowl Appearances - 1
Super Bowl Victories - 0
I love Dan Marino's game and competitive nature. He is the best quarterback that never won a Super Bowl. No question about it. Had he won just one, he would be much higher on this list. Probably as high as #3.
#8 - Jim Kelly
Career Yards - 35,467
Super Bowl Appearances - 4
Super Bowl Victories - 0
It's sucks that Jim Kelly never got a Super Bowl victory, but he did not. The fact is, though, that no matter how bad it looks that he lost 4 straight Super Bowls, he went to 4 straight, and that is crazy.
That is my list. So, tell me what is wrong with it. I expect you to.
