There really are everyday life heroes and they include our service men and women and a teenager in Mahopac.

From a story in the Putnam Daily Voice, Cullen Malzo of Mahopac happened to witness a car spin out of control and go flying into Lake Mahopac. Malzo actually heard the two girls inside the car screaming as it plunged into the lake where it landed upside down. Without a moment of hesitation, Malzo dialed 911, stripped off his shoes and sprinted into the lake hoping he could get to the girls before it was too late. When he got to the lake, he dove in and found it muddy and difficult to maneuver. When he dove into the water, he could barely see anything.

One of the submerged windows already had a hole in it where one of the girl's hands was reaching through. Malzo grabbed the hand and pulled!

"The first girl came out easily and after I got her to the other side of the car I went back underwater to try and find the second person who I couldn't see."

He told the Daily Voice he eventually found a foot and just kept pulling until the second girl also flew out the hole in the window. Both girls were beaten up a little but not severely injured. Julia Prowf, a senior at Mahopac High and one of the girls' that was rescued by Malzo, knocked on his door on the Monday after the accident to personally thank him. She really thought her time was up.
