Sqauntz Pond State Park in New Fairfield continues to be closed due to some harmful algae that has been found.

According the NBC Connecticut, the park was closed all weekend with plenty of 'No Swimming' signs posted across the property to alert residents of the danger. The blue green colored algae is reported to be harmful to people and dogs.

The algae is scientifically called, cyanobacteria, and it was found during a routine water sample done at the park, and it apparently naturally grows in lakes in the area. It's created when the weather gets warmer and high levels of phosphorous are combined just right.

Symptoms of any contact to this bacteria can range from skin irritation, vomiting, or even liver problems if a lot is ingested after swimming in the water, says NBC Connecticut.

The beach remained closed all weekend, but we will see if more tests will take place this week to see if it's safe to swim again. The CT DEEP will have any updates posted on their website.
