It's an age old question that has baffled men and historians alike for centuries. With hundreds of years of experience under our belts we still cannot get a definitive answer.  I will give it a shot anyway.

Any relationship that is a month old or younger and you can at least discuss not exchanging gifts but anything longer than that and you are screwed.

However if your relationship is 6 months old or shorter 1 small gift a piece is acceptable depending on how materialistic your partner is.

Anything over 6 months and it's going to cost you.  END OF STORY.

Each relationship though is different though so unfortunately you have to listen when your partner talks and read between the lines and hope for the best.  GOOD LUCK, you will need it and so will I.
