Sanders Leads Clinton in Latest Marist Poll

In an updated local/national poll Bernie Sanders is now leading Hilary Clinton in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

According to a new McClatchy-Marist poll, the Vermont Senator leads the former Secretary of State, by two points, 49% to 47%, in a poll conducted March 29 through March 31.

The poll is the latest sign of Sander’s momentum, which he boasted about after his victory in the Wisconsin primary on Tuesday. In the last national Marist poll, from Nov. 2015, Clinton led Sanders by 22 points.

"The difference between support for Sanders and Clinton is generational," Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, said in a statement. "Other distinctions blur when you account for a voter's age."

Sanders leads Clinton by a two to one margin among Democrats and Democratic leaning independents under the age of 45. The poll also shows that Sanders has about a 30 point lead among Latino voters.

In Democrats or independents leaning Democrat, Clinton leads Sanders by 26 points. Both candidates have near equal numbers among white men and women.

A startling discovery shows that 25% of Sanders supporters say they won’t support Clinton in the general election. 69% say they would support Clinton if she wins the Democratic nomination.

If Sanders wins the nomination, 79% of Clinton supports say they will support Sanders in November. 14% say they would not back Sanders.
