On this day in rock history, Shindig! premiered on ABC. The show, the first program dedicated to rock n' roll, spotlighted many of the greatest pop, rock and soul acts of the day during its run from Sept. 16, 1964 to Jan. 8, 1966.

In 1977, Talking Heads became the newest band from the fertile downtown New York to arrive when their debut, Talking Heads: 77, hit shelves nationwide. Frank Zappa's Studio Tan was part of a closet-cleaning package called Lather that, against Zappa's wishes, was chopped up into four separate albums. Perfect Strangers was not only the first Deep Purple record in nine years, it saw the return of the Mark II lineup with which they rose to stardom. Kiss' released Asylum, their first full release with Bruce Kulick as lead guitarist. Finally, David Bowie gave us Reality, which would be his last record until he surprised everybody with 2013's The Next Day.

Celebrating a birthday today is Kenney Jones. The drummer for the Small Faces, the Faces and the Who was born in 1941. We also lost Marc Bolan of T. Rex when a car driven by his girlfriend, Gloria Jones, collided with a tree. Bolan, who was born Mark Feld, was two weeks shy of his 30th birthday.
