If you see one of these snow plows around New York State don't freak out -- they're supposed to do this.

The NY State Department of Transportation purchased 62 new tow plows this year. The plows can separate themselves and swing out into two lanes to clear more roadway in a shorter amount of time.

Seeing one of these plows in action, however, can be a bit unnerving. Some have mistaken the plows for a truck that has started to jackknife or a tractor trailer that is starting to slide out of control.

A video posted to the NYS DOT's Twitter account shows just how crazy these things look on the road:

There seems to have been a learning curve for plow operates who now have to re-learn to clear snow with this new equipment. Syracuse.com reported two accidents involving tow plows in January, just weeks after the new vehicles were deployed.
