My Warm & Fuzzy Memories of Dancing in Danbury’s ‘Nutcracker’ Ballet
Oh how I long to put some rosin on my toe shoes and dance the roll of the Sugar Plum Fairy. I kid you not, I danced in The Nutcracker ballet, and it was always my dream to be the Sugar Plum!
I saved my pointe - "toe" - shoes for years after I stopped taking ballet. I would still put them on occasionally just to prove I could still do it. I went searching for them recently and couldn't find them. But even thinking about them brought back great memories.
I was a student of Miss Burdette's for quite a few years in Danbury. I loved running up the stairs to the dance studio she ran on the top floor of the Thomas Settle building in Danbury. It sat next to the old Danbury library on Main Street. Not only did I look forward to my classes with Miss Burdette, but the studio had a skylight and big windows, so it was glorious when it snowed. It felt like dancing in a snow globe.
Years later when the top of the building burned I remember being reduced to tears.
Miss Burdette teamed up back in the day with the Danbury Music Centre to bring The Nutcracker to the stage for the holidays. I danced in it a few times, but never had the coveted roll of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Maybe I'll put that on my bucket list.
Time for a warm and fuzzy holiday tradition in Danbury. Tickets are on sale now for the Danbury Music Centre’s 49th annual performance of the Nutcracker. So many fabulous dancers of all ages on stage are accompanied by the Danbury Symphony Orchestra live. The production takes place at the auditorium at Danbury High School, 43 Clapboard Ridge Road.
The performances are Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m., Dec. 10 at 2:30 p.m., and 6:30 p.m., and Dec. 11 at 3 pm. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Danbury Music Centre, 256 Main Street, Danbury or online.
Since Danbury High School is my alma mater, maybe I'll try to convince the Sugar Plum Fairy to let me take her place!
