A routine traffic stop in Newtown has resulted in a very large seizure of both marijuana and cash.

In the very early hours of the morning on Friday (Dec. 23), Newtown police officers were performing what they thought would be a routine traffic stop at 182 South Main Street, but while speaking to the people in the car, the officers claim that they smelled the strong aroma of marijuana.

Police say that one of the passengers in the vehicle, 20-year-old Chad Davis of Portland, OR., admitted to a small amount of pot, but after the officers removed that amount from the car, the strong scent was still present, resulting in a further search. As pictured above, the NPD then found about 21.4 ounces of marijuana and what appears in the photo to be around $2,400 in cash. Sergeant Aaron Bahamonde of the Newtown PD said that:

This is certainly one of the largest marijuana and cash seizures generated from a routine motor vehicle stop in recent memory. The officers involved did a great job.

Chad Davis was arrested and charged with non-student possession of drug paraphernalia near a school zone, illegal sale of a controlled substance, and criminal possession of more than 4 oz. of marijuana. He was released on a $2,500 appearance bond.
