New Report Says Heroin Use At 20 Year High

Apparently there is no end in sight to this epidemic.

As the terribly sad stories of drug addiction and deaths not only in Connecticut, but all across the country continue, the most recent reports are not encouraging.

Heroin use in the U.S. is the highest it's been in two decades.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime just issued their drug report.

It says that there were around one million heroin users in the U.S. in 2014, nearly triple the number from 2003. Deaths have increased as well, with five times as many heroin-related fatalities as there were in 2000.

Executive Director Yury Fedotov of the UNDOC has this to say in the report:

heroin continues to be the drug that kills the most people and this resurgence must be addressed urgently

The report from the UNDOC also says that around five per cent of the adult population, or nearly 250 million people between the ages of 15 and 64, used at least one drug in 2014.

Scary and sobering statistics for sure. Sadly I hold out not much hope for this epidemic being eradicated in our lifetime.
