Terribly sad news comes out of New Milford today related to a structure fire that broke out around noon on Tuesday (Nov. 29).

According to a press release from Lieutenant Lawrence Ash of the New Milford Police Department, the town's dispatch center was notified via a 9-1-1 emergency call from a nearby neighbor that the structure fire was ablaze at 12 Carriage Drive.

At that time, the Water Witch Hose Company #2, the Northville Fire Department, and the Gaylordsville Fire Department were all dispatched to the scene to gain control over the blaze. During the course of extinguishing the fire, firefighters discovered that a female victim, later identified as 52-year-old New Milford resident, Valerie Miller, had passed away inside the home. The report states that Miller was the sole occupant of the residence, and was at home alone at the time.

The exact cause of the structure fire is currently under investigation by the Connecticut State Police and the State Fire Marshal.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and relatives of Valerie Miller.
