Justice has finally been served 15 years later for murdered Newtown man, Mark Rebong, as well as for his family.

Imagine the horrible moment when you get a phone call from a hospital telling you a family member has been injured in an accident.

Imagine the horrific moment when your loved one dies.

Now, imagine the horrendous moment when you find it was no accident.

Imagine thinking the mystery of your son's death will never be solved. That is the horror that Mark Rebong's family felt for 15 years.

The mystery of what happened on I-84 in Danbury Connecticut on the night of Jan. 17, 2000 has finally been put to rest. Here is how it played out in a series of articles reported in the Newstimes.

11 plus years after Mark's murder, the Newstimes published an article on June 11, 2011, recounting the story of the crime and that there were still no answers. Mark's father, Efron, told the Newstimes:

Sometimes you think, how can these people sleep at night?

Fast forward to a Newstimes story from Oct. 23, 2015, when years after the case went cold, police finally cracked it. Though they offered no information about how they did, U.S. Attorney Deidre M. Daly told the newspaper:

Although over 15 years have passed, the law enforcement team never forgot Mark. We hope that this indictment brings his family some small measure of solace

In what turned out to be a tragic case of mistaken identity, Mark Rebong's family and friends now have a small measure of peace as his story comes full circle. According to newstimes.com,  Alex Garcia was charged with Rebong's murder in 2015 and plead guilty in 2016.

On Oct. 19, 2016 the Newstimes reported that Alex Garcia was sentenced to 30-years in prison for the murder of Mark Rebong on I-84 in Danbury. Attorney Daly had this to say to the Newstimes:

In a reckless act of brutal violence, this defendant murdered an innocent young man who was driving to work. I commend the investigators from the Danbury police, State Police and DEA who never stopped searching for Mark’s killer until he was finally brought to justice. Hopefully the Rebong family, who showed patience and courage and dignity throughout this ordeal, have found a measure of solace in this result.

I pray that Mark may finally rest in peace.
