Health officials are saying it's only a matter of time before heroin laced with elephant tranquilizer makes its way to the area. That's right, I said elephant tranquilizer!

According to putnamdailyvoice.com, this new strain of heroin that originated in the midwest is made with the synthetic drug carfentanil, which is 10,000 times stronger than morphine. Donald Johnson, program director for the methadone program at the Guidance Center of Westchester told the Putnam Daily Voice:

You can guarantee it will turn up. At this point it's just a waiting game until it shows up.

Johnson also pointed out that this strain of heroin is so toxic that overdose drugs like Narcan may not work. He also went on to tell the Putnam Daily Voice:

When you think about what it takes to bring down an elephant, you can imagine the effect the drug has on a person when mixed with heroin.

This particular additive to the drug is different than the heroin laced with Fentanyl, which officials have been combating in a separate situation. Fentanyl is said to be 50 times stronger than heroin. Furthermore, Fentanyl is absorbed through the skin, which means that police and EMS workers are at risk when treating affected patients.

Johnson told the Putnam Daily Voice that across Westchester County the heroin problem is bigger than the resources that are available, which translates into waiting lists for individuals who need help. If you need immediate help with opioid or heroin addiction, call The Guidance Center of Westchester at 914-632-1374.
