The skies are blue, the heat is on, and it appears that Squantz Pond is the place to be.

I grew up in Danbury, and Squantz Pond in New Fairfield has always been a hot spot of summer fun. I remember numerous times of being turned away from parking there because the lot was full. Never did we drive away and park on a side street to walk in. We just went some place else.

Times have changed. Over the years, more and more people from outside of our area have come to enjoy Squantz, and that has lead to overcrowding.

Back in June, New Fairfield First Selectman Susan Chapman called for a ban on walk in attendees at Squantz Pond State Park. As summer went on, the issues remained, and I blogged about the ongoing overcrowding on July 25.

In a story from newstimes.com, here it is August and Chapman is still asking for the ban.

In my mind, there are three things at play here. The parking lot only holds 250 cars. Visitors often come from out of state with the intent of a day of swimming, and they'll find a way in if they get turned away from the lot. Route 39, which is the main access point, is fairly narrow and parked cars along the road don't help.

Until the town, the state, and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection all get on the same page, the overcrowding will remain.
