According to New Fairfield resident Myke Furhman, SRS Real Estate, who supposedly owns the New Fairfield Shopping Center, has been scouting locations for Walgreens, and has been looking at The New Fairfield Shopping Center.

The buzz started up when the New Fairfield Luncheonette closed down suddenly this past week supposedly because they were told their lease was not going to be renewed. According to Furhman, the businesses will be systematically forced out of their location by the owners in order to make room for a new Walgreens.

According to one "shop owner" I spoke with, Walgreens had approached the Town of New Fairfield about opening a store, but the Town turned them away. He also told me that the owners walked into his shop last week, and proceeded to tell them that "This is no place for a Walgreens!

This is "cattle crossing" New Fairfield, not Fairfield. We're a small town and people in this town appreciate the small town atmosphere with a local deli and butcher shoppe, a bakery where you can buy fresh homemade baked goods and sit down and chat with friends."

He also went on to say that, "Bringing a Walgreens into this community would destroy that hometown feel, not to mention put a handful of stores and shops out of business!"

I've lived in New Fairfield since we moved to Connecticut 36 years ago, and personally, I like to shop for my meat the New Fairfield Food Center better known as "Johnny's." I would prefer to savor a homemade loaf of 7 grain bread and the best Black & White cookie I've ever had at The Goodie Shoppe instead of being able to walk into a Walgreens to buy Dr. Scholl's Wart Removers: Freeze Away 7 Pk. on sale for $4. How long is it until we hear "It's not personal, it's only business."
