The oldest homeless shelter in Danbury offers free meals and shelter for individuals who are in need, and now, after 30 years, they are being cited by the city of Danbury for being non-compliant.

According to the NewsTimes, Danbury City Hall can't figure out why city officials haven't come calling anytime over the last 30 years. The DDHS provides food and shelter to anyone over 18. No matter if you're homeless, down on your luck, or simply can't afford to buy food.

Spring Street residents are concerned about some of the lawlessness and vagrancy around Dorothy Day, and have been protesting to city officials. At the same time, city leaders are trying to improve the look and feel of downtown Danbury, especially with the building of new luxury apartments, Kennedy Flats.

Recently, I asked Mayor Mark Boughton when he appeared on the Ethan & Lou Show about what was going on with Dorothy Day. He told me that, "You have to comply with proper permits, which didn't happen in the 80s." He went on to say that they need to change the model that they adopted back in the 70s and 80s. He would like to see the DDHS go from casually letting anyone use their services, to a system where intakes are completed for these individuals. This would help the city match them to services that can help them get off the streets.

He told me the city is definitely not looking to shut them down, because they do provide valuable services. He would like to see them modernize their methods, which, in the long run, could help individuals who count on the Dorothy Day House to improve their lives significantly.
