I wasn't there, but I can totally see this happening. I mean, it was a Grateful Dead show after all.

The date was July 31, 1971. The spot was the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut. Jerry's birthday was the next day, and as you can see from the set list on dead.net, The Grateful Dead was making magic.

While I wasn't there that day to be part of the music history, or this other, interesting to note, piece of the story. I have no doubt in my mind that glow sticks and a Dead show go hand in hand!

According to thump.vice.com, these snappy, color glow sticks made their public debut at the July, 1971 Grateful dead concert in New Haven. The military had been using the stick for years, but the story recounted in the article of a Deadhead's connection to this mostly unknown product, and the glow stick light show that occurred at the concert makes perfect sense to me.

Speaking of making them, the science of it is pretty cool.

The rest, as they say, is history. Glow stick wars have become legendary. From concerts, to weddings, to your kid's birthday party, glow sticks have made their mark.
