A teenager from Mahopac is being called a hero for saving two young girls after their car crashed into a lake.

Thursday evening, two 17-year-old girls were traveling along North Lake Boulevard in Mahopac when the driver lost control of the car, hit a pole, flipped over, and landed upside down in Lake Mahopac.

Cullen Malzo, 19, of Mahopac saw the crash from his driveway and sprang into action. He immediately called 911, dove into the water and swam to the car, reports Tapinto.net.

Malzo swam through several feet of muck and pulled the girls out of a blown out window. Officials noted that Malzo was covered, from head to to, in mud after his heroic act.

By the time emergency officials arrived, the two girls were already brought to shore. Both suffered minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital as a precaution. Their names are not being released.

Speed is believed to have caused the accident. Drugs or alcohol don’t appear to be a factor, police say.
